Shooting for the STAARs....
Parents, We are in a very important time of the year for our third grade students. We are working hard to make sure we have learned all of the third grade TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills) so that we are prepared for the state assessment in April and for the rigors of fourth grade next year. Please support your child as much as possible during this time. Another important thing to think about right now is GT nominations. Please read the following note from our Quest teacher. Thanks! Weatherford ISDwill be conducting GT testing for nominated students in grades 1-6 beginning April 30th.Nominations are due April 13th. Forms may be obtained from your campus office and returned to your campus GT Specialist through the school office. The following are district guidelines concerning GT testing: Students may be nominated for the gifted and talented program by teachers, counselors, parents, or other interested persons. A selection committee shall evaluate each nominated student according to the established criteria and shall select those students for whom gifted program placement is the most appropriate educational setting. Assessment tools may include but not be limited to the following: achievement tests, intelligence tests, creativity tests, behavioral checklists completed by teachers, and student work products. Nominated students shall be assessed once during the spring semester.Students who do not qualify may not test again until two years have passed (ex: a 1st grade tester who did not qualify may not test again until 3rd grade.)Parents and students shall be notified in writing upon selection of the student for the gifted program.

The Second Six Weeks Begins!
We have had a very busy first six weeks adjusting to the rigorous pace of third grade academics, but we've made it through and now have our routines for learning and behavior in place. Please help us earn attendance and "no tardies" rewards by making sure your child is at school and on time! We're halfway there to our first attendance reward, so let's make it happen...Unfortunately, we're a LONG WAY off from our "no tardies" award. Please remember the first bell rings at 7:45 and we get to work on spelling and handwriting right away. If your child is late, then he/she is missing out on important instruction. I look forward to meeting with each of you Monday, October 10th for parent conferences so I can share important information with you about your child's progress and our plan to ensure academic success in 2011-2012. Thanks for sharing your child with me! -Mrs. MacKenzie

First week = SUCCESS!!!
Parents- We had a great first week of third grade getting to know each other and establishing our classroom rules and responsibilities. We also got right down to the business of doing third grade, and that included plenty of work! I'm sure you're wondering what exactly it is that we will be learning in third grade, so read on for our exciting 1st six weeks learning itinerary: English/Language Arts: We will be exploring the fiction genre, focusing on story elements, character relationships and theme. We will be writing our first story (a narrative) by using the steps of the writing process (all the way to publishing and sharing around our "campfire"). We will also be studying words by learning about prefixes, suffixes, 3-letter clusters and context clues. Math: We will expand on our place value knowledge from second grade through the hundred thousands' place. We will also compare and order numbers and explore addition and subtraction. Social Studies: We will learn beginning map skills and cardinal/intermediate directions Science: We will begin with science safety and jump right into properpties of matter and the three states of matter. IMPORTANT REMINDERS: PLEASE CONTINUE TO SEND A HEALTHY SNACK FOR YOUR CHILD AND A WATER BOTTLE. NO JUICE BOXES ARE ALLOWED IN THE CARPETED CLASSROOMS. ALSO, YOU ARE WELCOME TO CONTACT ME ANY TIME WITH QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS. 817-598-2818 X 4646

Welcome to the 2011-2012 school year
A new school year is upon us and there is much work to be done in third grade! Parents, please be looking for the school's annual student packet (brown manila envelope) and a third grade welcome packet. This is that time of year for forms, forms, and more forms. Please be patient with us and fill these out as they are very important in helping us stay in contact with you and know important information about your child. I know this is a chore as I have two sets of these to do myself, but please help us out and have them returned to school within a day or so of receiving them. Thank you so much! Stay tuned to this website for important information and updates about our monthly class learning objectives. Looking forward to a great year! -Niki MacKenzie
