My Interests

Welcome to my ePortfolio! A few things about me:

I am a college instructor, which really means I am a perpetual student. I am interested in learning about rhetoric. I wonder if it is merely a system for making others think the way I think, or if it is meant to lead all of us to ultimate truths. We live in a postmodern world which seems to offer us so many varieties of truth.

We can analyze anything as a text, as a source of rhetoric, as a body of symbols that are meant to hold meaning. So that is what has brought me to the e-portfolio. It is a new way of devising and constructing a text. It is an interesting way to play with how a text constructs personal identity.

So my reading these days is wide and varied. To see a growing list of my reading for leisure, consult the blog. Let me know what you recommend to read--postmodern novels especially.

More importantly, I hope to browse the Epsilen network to see how you construct your personal identity.

Educational Experiences:   My Master's degree and doctoral work in English were done at The University of Toledo.  My Bachelor's degree is a double major in Fine Art and English from Siena Heights College (now Siena Heights University), where I studied painting at Studio Angelica.

My Bio:
As a composition instructor in the English dept. at the University of Toledo since 1979, I currently teach first year writing courses. These include Composition I & II and courses in professional and technical writing. Much has changed in the teaching of college writing over the past three decades, and I am eager to present students with the best and most up-to-date resources available.

Over the course of my career as a college instructor, I have supplemented my income by working as a picture framer and installer at an art gallery, a bookseller at a retail book chain, and as a factory worker at an art supply catalog company. Each of these experiences has contributed to my understanding of how people communicate on the job. These experiences help me enrich the lessons I bring to my courses.

I am interested in online learning environments. I wish to explore how they can be used for program assessment, course management, and collaboration between students at different universities.
