Marie Janes is the Director of the Health Information Management Program and Post-baccalaureate degree Certificate in Health Information Administration program. She holds an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Health Information Technology (1984) from Bowling Green State University Firelands College, a Bachelor of Science in Institutional Healthcare Supervision from the University of Toledo (1994), and a Master of Education in Career and Technology Education from Bowling Green State University (2000), with an emphasis on training and development. In November 1984, Marie earned the credential for an Accredited Record Technician (ART). In November 1999, she passed the certification examination and became a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA). Both credentials are awarded by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA). Marie’s past work experience includes her position as the Instructional/Technical Assistant in the HIT program at BGSU Firelands College from 1986 to 1999. She kept current in all aspects of the health information management field (i.e., coding, abstracting, transcription, chart assembly and analysis, tumor registry, filing, etc.) working contingent positions at hospitals and healthcare facilities in Northwest Ohio, including: Providence Hospital, Firelands Community Hospital, Memorial Hospital of Sandusky County, Magruder Hospital, Stein Hospice, Peer Review Systems, Mercy Health Plan, Saint Vincent’s Medical Center, Medical College of Ohio, and others. The position at BGSU Firelands was eliminated due to downsizing in 1999; however, Marie used her transferable skills to keep busy in the healthcare industry and to take on a new challenge as an administrative assistant to project managers at the prominent architectural and engineering firm of SSOE in downtown Toledo from 2001-2002. Marie served as a Health Information Technology adjunct faculty member at Owens Community College for the academic year 2001 to 2002. Additionally, Marie served as an instructor at the University of Toledo in the Medical Assisting Certificate program during 2002. Currently, Marie is an Associate Lecturer in the College of Health Science and Human Service, Health Professions Department at the University of Toledo, developing curriculum and maintaining accreditation standards required by the Commission on Accreditation of Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) Education. Marie is an active member of the national (AHIMA), state (OHIMA), and regional (NWOHIMA) health information management associations. Marie credits her success to her mentors, friends, and family who supported her throughout her career. Additionally, Marie cherishes the memories of working with wonderful students at the various educational institutions in northwest Ohio. She is proud to be considered their colleague in the field of health information management!
