January 23-27
This week in math students will be measuring angles using protractors. It is not necessary for students to purchase a protractor. I have many available in class and I am giving students one created on card stock for their use.
Math packets will be filled with review concepts that will be included for the upcoming STAAR test in April. Future math packets will include more of the same. It is a great opportunity for me to observe concepts that students need increased review.
CiCi's pizza night is Tuesday, January 24.

Have a blessed week!
February 6-10
Time continues to fly by...

This week in math, students will be studying the STAAR Mathematics Reference Chart as it relates to our continued study of geometry. Using this chart, students will find formulas for area and perimeter of various shapes. Students will continue a study of circles and end the week validating formulas for trapezoids and parallelograms.

On Thursday students will take the Reading STAAR practice test.
On Friday students will take the Math STAAR practice test.
Each of the practice tests will involve a two hour time span for testing. It is half of the time that will be allowed for the actual STAAR test with half of the question content. The purpose of the practice is to allow students to experience a "taste" of the test as well as give the teachers a better view of student progress and needs. Please be sure that your student is well rested and fed so they may do their best.

Your continued support is greatly appreciated!
Have a wonderful week!
February 20 - 24
This is the last week of the 4th six weeks. It is hard to beleive that we are heading into the 5th six weeks already.

We have the results from the STAAR Release Test for each student. Ask your student for his/her individual score. Scores were taken from only 13 questions; therefore, I will assess student needs using additional information. I will be arranging some tutoring groups as needed. I will contact you if I need to meet with your student during a before or after school time. All students will not be selected to meet during these specialized tutoring times. Please remember that packets are for review of concepts throughout the year.

This week, students will be exploring and practicing converting customary measurements as they relate to capacity, volume, and weight.

November 28-December 3
This week students will focus on proportional relationships. They will observe the linear relationship on a graph when ratios are proportional. They will make predictions and solve problems by using proportions. We will begin a "Shrink Art" project to observe proportions while creating Christmas ornaments.

In addition to working with proportions, PreAP students will continue forming businesses, products, and commercials in order to begin sales the following week. We will discuss basic economics and persuasive communication skills as it relates to their business. This is a wonderfully promising project to exemplify the "Spirit of Christmas". All profits will go to aid the recovery of a former Austin Elementary student, Esteban Morales, who is recovering from an unexpected brain surgery he experienced this past summer.
December 12-16
It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! One week before we will have our Christmas break. Please remember that students will be dismissed at 11:45 on Friday, December 16. I know everyone is looking forward to a wonderful Christmas.

6th grade PreAP businesses are doing an amazing job making and selling their products. We should be able to help the Morales family with great blessings! After all, Christmas is a time for giving. Businesses will conclude sales on Wednesday and deliveries no later than Friday (hopefully before Friday). Thanks to all of you who have helped to make this such a success!

3 week progress reports for the third six weeks go home on Tuesday.

**Wednesday is our "Latte in the Library" time from 1:30 to 2pm. Please come, have a latte, and enjoy time in the library with your child. You could even shop the 6th grade businesses.

This week in math class students will create shrink art Christmas ornaments in studying proportions and play games with probability. The packet will be filled with Christmas/winter puzzles and brain teasers. There will be no math homework on Thursday or  test on Friday. I know the students will enjoy their week!

Have a safe and wonderful Christmas break!

January 9-16
Happy New Year!!!
It is so great to see all of the children again. I hope everyone had a very blessed Christmas break.

This week will be very busy with many activities.
  • Tuesday is Chick-fil-A Night for Austin Elementary. Each student that attends dinner at Chick-fil-A can turn in a ticket (given by their homeroom teacher) to the attendant at the restaurant to receive credit and points for our school/classroom. These points turn into money and items for our school, classrooms, and students! Thank you in advance for your support!
  • Wednesday is the Geography Bee at 1:30. Good luck to all the contestants!
  • Thursday from 12 to 1 all 6th grade helpers from the past 6 weeks will go on a special lunch with Austin Administration. Thank you for being a helper!

This week is a fun packed week when students will discover ratios. We will create, discuss,  and compare ratios. On Monday, students will collect data using "dry ice"  to set up ratios and graphs. Tuesday, students will continue with their data to make graphs on mini computers. Wednesday and Thursday, students will continued to create ratios and relate fractions to decimals and percents. Friday, Packet 11 and homework is due. Short quiz on ratios.

Friday is AFV (Austin Family Videos)! This is a fun time to share and cheer for one another!
Friday students will go to WHS to experience the Weatherfor Jazz Band concert.
November 14-18
During this week, our math classes will review and analyze data from the district MAPS test 1. We will review weak areas and celebrate strengths. We will set goals.
Packet 13 is given to students on Monday. It will review proportions, unit rate, and ratios. Packet is due on Friday.
Students will take Quiz 3-1 on Friday. This quiz will evaluate student understanding of exponents, ratios, proportions, and subtracting mixed numbers with regrouping.
2nd Six Week report cards go home this week.
Next week is short. Only Monday and half a day on Tuesday. This will give us time to be with families and loved ones. Be Blessed!
Pre-AP Math
Pre-AP Math classes might enjoy having a larger spiral for keeping information. I recommended to them the MEAD five-star 100 page spiral with the pocket page in the front. This is nice to use, but not required. It is up to you and your child. All students in all classes may use this as it creates more room; however, the 70 page spirals are sufficient. It may take two of the 70 page spirals to hold all the information for this year in math. Please be advised, this is an interactive math spiral and needs to be brought to class each day. Thank you for all your help with your child's learning!
September 26 - 30
We are so excited to announce Ariana Saltarelli the winner of the answer to the Blog. Yes, birthdays are so fun!! Congratulations, Ariana!

This week we are studying and reviewing equivalent fractions and order of operations.

Packet 6 shows an explanation of changing fractions to an equivalent fraction with a common denominator. Equivalent fractions are important concepts for:
  1. comparing and ordering fractions
  2. adding or subtracting fractions
Order of Operations uses the acronym PEMDAS to remember in what order to multiply/divide and add/subtract in a problem that contains more than one operation. Students will have notes on this starting Wednesday.

Remember:
  • packets are due on Friday
  • homework is given on Thursday
  • Quiz on Friday
  • This Friday is the end of the 6 weeks
  • All extra credit is due by Wednesday
  • All incomplete work or corrections must be turned in by this Friday.
September 26th
Thank you to all for a wonderful birthday celebration! The cake was AWESOME! We had a great day with lots of cake for everyone!
October 3-7
This week in math we are continuing  our study of equivalent forms of rational numbers. Students are practicing in class and in their packet 7. Vocabulary review is daily. Homework on Thursday night from the textbook page 672 Lesson 4-7 (1-5) and Lesson 4-8 (1-5). Packet 7 due Friday and Quiz 2-1.

Parents, don't forget that Monday, October 10th is a student holiday! It is parent/teacher conference day. Please don't forget to schedule your appointment with your child's homeroom teacher to discuss and pick up your child's report card. You can always review your child's math spiral for daily grades, notes, tests, activities, and packet grades.
Welcome to 6th Grade!
Welcome to 6th Grade!

Sixth grade is the last year in elementary school; therefore, my goal is to make this a wonderful experience.  Please access this site often for information and communication. In addition, please feel free to contact me via email (lhowell@weatherfordisd.com) or phone (817-598-2848 ext. 4354). Your child is my mission.

Parent portal is another important tool for communication. If you have not yet accessed your child's account, please come by the office for your computer password to receive entry to viewing all of your student's grades along with teacher comments and information. This is readily available to you at all times and will constantly be updated. It is a wonderful communication tool.

As your child's math teacher it is my vision that your child not only gain knowledge and acheive high scores on math STAAR, but that your child develop a joy and appreciation for math as it relates to the world around them. We will have activities and play games that I hope will be shared at home.

Please regulary view your child's spiral as it contains all activities, games, daily work, tests, notes, and vocabulary. Students are to keep this continually updated with a table of contents and taped graded papers. In this way, students and parents should be able to keep up with grade point averages. Remember that any paper that falls below a 70 can be corrected to have the grade raised to 70.

In addition, students are keeping data binders that include graphed test scores and goals. These are updated periodically by students to examine strengths and weaknesses in various areas of math. Tutoring is constantly taking place during study hall and math extension for those students in need.

Thank you so much for sharing your child with me this year. I look forward to many successes and accomplishments as we move through the days ahead. Again, feel free to contact me at anytime.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Lee Howell
