Welcome to Reading!
Welcome to READ 180! My name is Mrs. Christenson. I am excited about this school year!

READ 180 is a reading intervention program that allows teachers to help struggling readers. READ 180 has been proven to meet the needs of students who struggle with reading comprehension, writing skills, and vocabulary. The program directly addresses individual needs through differentiated, adaptive, and direct instruction.

Daily Classroom Activities:
Everyday the students will be following the same routine. We will be working together as a class during Whole Group Instruction for the first 20 minutes of class. Then, the students will divide into two groups. One center the students will work in is Small Group Instruction with the teacher for 20 minutes. Another center the students will work in is Instructional Topic Software at the computers for 20 minutes. Each group will work in at both centers. The next 20 minutes of class the students will come back to their desks and will read their books for the Independent Reading center. The last ten minutes of class everyone will come back together to bring a close to the READ 180 day.

Mrs. Christenson - READ 180

Expectations:

  1. When the bell rings:
    1. Be on time, be seated, and quietly face the front of the room
  2. Treat Others with Respect
    1. Do not prevent other members of the class from learning with distractions or uninvited talking. (Please raise your hand for questions or comments )
  3. Stay on Task
  4. Be Ready to Learn Everyday
  5. Do Your Best Everyday
  6. Bring a pen/pencil to class everyday
  7. No food, drink, or gum is allowed in the classroom

Disciplinary Action taken by Mrs. Christenson:

Each student will receive three hall passes per six weeks. The student can use each hall pass at his or her own will except during whole group and small group discussion. Once all three passes have been used in a given six weeks, the student will not be allowed to leave the class. Hall passes may be used for tardiness, restroom breaks, and/or going back to locker to get supplies for class.

If a student is tardy, does not have all supplies needed for class, disruptive or disrespectful during class, or is not on task, he or she will receive a “detention slip”. The student will fill out the “detention slip” and place it on Mrs. Christenson’s desk. This will serve as a warning. If at the end of class, the student has met the expectations of the class, the “detention slip” will become void. However, if the student continues to not meet the expectations of the class, he or she will need to come to Mrs. Christenson’s classroom for detention before school from 8:00-8:15. The student will need to come to detention within two days after receiving the detention slip. If a student is referred to detention, his or her parents will be contacted by Mrs. Christenson. If this becomes excessive, further actions may be taken.

Grading Policy:

D.        Tests/Quizzes (25%)

Late Work:

I do accept late work. You may NOT turn it in during class, but you may turn it in before or after school. Late work will be accepted up to 3 school days after the assignment is due. Twenty points will be deducted for each day the assignment is late. If the student has not turned the assignment in by the 3rd day, the student will receive a zero for the assignment. For cases such as illness, death in the family, etc. there is a non-penalized grace period for late work. Failure in my class is NOT an option.

Homework:

Each student is required to read two books and complete supplemental paperwork covering the book each six weeks.  Some reading may have to be done at home if the student does not finish in the Independent Reading Center in class.

Tutorials:

My tutorial times are Monday-Friday from 7:45-8:10 am. Please let me know the day before if you are planning on coming in to tutorials. Other times by appointment only.

Daily Class Routine:

Everyday the students will be following the same routine. We will be working together as a class during Whole Group Instruction for the first 20 minutes of class. Then, the students will divide into two groups. One center the students will work in is Small Group Instruction with the teacher for 20 minutes. Another center the students will work in is Instructional Topic Software at the computers for 20 minutes. Each group will work at both centers. The next 20 minutes of class the students will come back to their desks and will read their books for the Independent Reading center. The last ten minutes of class everyone will come back together to bring a close to the READ 180 day.

It is very important for the success of every student that each student works quietly and continuously while he/she is at the computers in the Instructional Software center or reading his/her book in the Independent Reading center. Each student will be required to read a minimum of ten pages a day during the Independent Reading center.
