Math:
This year in math we will work in groups, use manipulative's, create games and hands-on activities and even take the classroom outside to learn.  You will need to bring a spiral notebook EVERY day to math class.  This is where you will write all of your examples, notes, pictures, explanations, etc.  It will become your study guide and sometimes you are allowed to use it on exams.  It will serve as the most important resource you will use in our class.  Please make sure that you always have it and come prepared to write it in each day.

*Each week, we will have a "new" game to add to the activities...bring your favorite from home!

Science:
This year in science we will work in groups to complete labs and experiments.  Most of our work will be done in class rather than as homework.  On occasion, there might be assignments that have to be completed at home but students will know in plenty of time and parents can check that time line via the student agenda.  Some of our labs will take multiple days to finish but that will allow several grades to be taken on an "in progress" status.  Some of our activities will be done outside depending on the weather.  Research will be a regular component of our science class and can usually be done on our "mini 10" computers, hopefully twice a week.  We will also be able to use the computer lab on a weekly basis for research as needed.  Of course, students may always work at home on their own computer to address vocabulary and research assignments.

Students MUST have a spiral notebook for science class and it must be recorded in on a DAILY basis.  This journal will serve as the backbone of the science class as there is no textbook for a reference guide.  This journal must be in the classroom every day to update notes, labs, experiments, and examples.  The journal will also house the research notes and study tips that can be used on some tests and exams.  Grades will be taken on journal notes each week so it is very important that the journal is up to date, complete, and in order.

**The tardy bell rings at 8:00 a.m.  You must be in your seat when the bell rings in order to be counted as present.  Students are asked to be in the classroom when the 7:45 a.m. bell rings.  This time is for students to get their supplies ready for the day, fill water bottles, use the restroom, and visit with friends.  Students need to have agenda's ready, journals on their desks, pencils sharpened, and backpacks placed under the cubbies.  We begin our day as soon as announcements are over and your student will not want to miss even a minute of our activities.

**Please check the requirements for dress code in the student handbook.

**Our lunch time is not until 1:00 p.m. so students are encouraged to bring healthy snacks.  We usually eat those around 11:00 a.m.  Good examples are crackers, granola bars, and fruits.  Potato chips, candy, and drinks other than water are not considered a healthy snack but could be eaten as part of the lunch at 1:00 p.m.

** Staying hydrated is important during  hot weather.  Students may bring a water bottle to school.  It needs to be a "snap" top not the twist off kind.  This prevents spills on our materials since we sit in groups.  Only water is to be in the classroom, no soft drinks or colored water.

** We will have recess on Wednesday and Friday around 10:30 or 11:00 a.m.  The other three days are used for academic enrichment.

**Our PE/Music/Band schedule will be from 2:30-3:10 daily.

**Target math/reading time is scheduled Monday-Thursday from 8:10-8:40.

**Math/Science Corrections:  Any grade below a 70 may be corrected during study hall.  In math, all homework must be corrected the next day during study hall.  Any class work (math or science) may be corrected with 24 hours of when the assignment was returned to the student. No test grades in either math or science may be corrected for a higher grade but missed problems/questions may be corrected to insure mastery of concepts.  The work must be corrected at school rather than at home.  The corrections sheet must be stapled to the original paper and given to the teacher for grading.
