Gilbert (Gil) Reyes PhD, a licensed clinical psychologist, is a faculty member and associate dean at Fielding Graduate University School of Psychology. His foundation of practice as a psychologist is informed by attachment theory, social learning theory, and the ecological-transactional model of human development. Gil’s teaching, consulting, and research focus on crisis, disaster, and psychological trauma, and he is a volunteer disaster mental health responder with the American Red Cross and a consultant to the Terrorism and Disaster Branch of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. He is also an active member of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, a member of the Steering Committee of Psychologists for Social Responsibility, and chairs the Disaster Relief Committee for the Division of Trauma Psychology (Division 56) at the American Psychological Association. As a member of the Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues (Division 45) and the International Division (Division 52) at the American Psychological Association, his efforts have recently been devoted to international collaboration on the evolving curriculum of psychology with an strong emphasis on culturally informed practices and principles.
Gil’s seminars and workshops, which are primarily available to Fielding students and alumni, are also made available to persons outside the Fielding community at conferences and continuing education events. The main topics he addresses concern the predictable psychosocial effects of disasters and other potentially traumatic events, the risk factors associated with the developmental impact of such events, the coping skills and strategies associated with resilience in the face of profound adversity, and the evidence-supported interventions for mitigating the effects of potentially traumatic experiences. Gil publishes regularly in this area of scholarship and is the lead editor of the four-volume Handbook of International Disaster Psychology and the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Psychological Trauma.
