From the Provost: New Requirements for Textbooks

From David W. McLaughlin, NYU Provost
Last year, Congress reauthorized the Higher Education Opportunity Act, which imposes on colleges and universities a number of new requirements to disclose, report, and provide information to students, parents, government officials, and the public. I write to bring your attention to regulations about textbooks and supplemental course materials. GOING FORWARD, THESE REGULATIONS WILL AFFECT THE WAY YOU PREPARE FOR YOUR COURSES AND ORDER YOUR BOOKS.
Among other provisions, HEOA states that to the maximum extent possible, institutions must make available to students specified information about required and recommended textbooks, including ISBN and retail price - and must do so at the time that students are registering for courses. Further, institutions are encouraged to disseminate information to students about campus-based initiatives to reduce costs, e.g., through used books and electronic books.
Our ability as an institution to comply with these new requirements depends on you, our faculty, providing the necessary textbook information as early as you possibly can in the registration process and earlier than you may have done in the past. Timely submission of book lists will also help NYU Bookstores reduce costs to students by increasing its used book supply. Understandably, you may not have decided on your course materials at the time of student registration, or you might want to change your course materials as you get closer to the start of the semester. If this is the case, you may send your requests when you know your materials, or change your requests as you have in the past. The HEOA textbook provisions will not interfere with pedagogical decisions.
The NYU Bookstores maintain a database that contains the most up-to-date information about books and their prices for each course. Students can search by course or ID number and obtain a list of the materials they will need for all their courses. Faculty can use the list to assess the financial cost of their course materials. Historically, this information was made available 3-4 weeks before classes began. Going forward, it will be available during registration.
In compliance with HEOA, NYU Bookstores has set deadlines for submitting course materials. NYU Bookstores reaches out to all faculty via email direct, and then follows up with customized messages to faculty who do not respond to the general request.
DEADLINE DATES FOR SUBMITTING BOOK LISTS Fall Term 2010 Course material submitted to bookstore: April 9 Registration begins: April 12
Spring Term 2011 Course material submitted to bookstore: November 13 Registration begins: November 16
Please see the information below about how to submit your book requisitions.
I appreciate the extent to which this requirement will change the way you prepare for your courses, and I thank you for your cooperation in ensuring NYU's compliance with these new regulations. I also want to thank Philip Christopher, Director of University Bookstores, for his leadership in addressing these requirements.
David W. McLaughlin
Provost

New Resources to Help You Prepare for Your Class

Dear Instructors:
We've been working on developing new materials for you to help prepare for your classes. It's not traditional documentation with pictures and text, but rather a screencast, where we have short videos, with audio and images that demonstrate how to use features within Epsilen and the Live Classroom. Example screencasts include: how to post welcome announcements, uploading a presentation to the Live Classroom and many, many more.
You can view the "Getting Started for Instructors" at this link: (You'll have to cut and paste it.)
http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=CF36291820B3EED0
And creating an online portfolio:

We have also embedded videos within the Lessons section of this course. Let us know what you think of this format.

Welcome to the Spring 2010 Faculty Development Program. The program consists of seven workshops designed to provide technical knowledge, procedural skills, and pedagogical strategies for using the new NYU SCPS ONLINE learning platform. All faculty and instructors using NYU SCPS ONLINE for the first time are expected to actively participate in seven workshops or enroll in an intensive workshop. The workshops are:
1. Online Course Preparation I: Understanding Requirements and Setting Expectations (an asynchronous tutorial)
2. Pedagogy for the Online Learning Environment
3. Online Course Preparation II: Syllabus, Lessons, Assignments, and More (an asynchronous tutorial)
4. Real Time Online Learning: Tools and Teaching Strategies
5. Online Classroom Management
6. Methods For Online Assessment
7. Forums, Wikis, and Blogs: Best Practices (an asynchronous tutorial)
Three of the workshops are asynchronous tutorials available 24 hours a day which you may take at your own pace. The other four workshops are real-time sessions conducted online using the Wimba Live Classroom. Review the Online Faculty Development Program Workshop Bulletin to determine when the live workshops are scheduled. The bulletin is available at URL http://distancelearning.scps.nyu.edu/bulletin/index.html
A new workshop available this year is the Intensive Workshop. Faculty and instructors who participate in this workshop can complete all four synchronous online workshops in a single afternoon. See the bulletin for details.
GETTING STARTED:
This course includes the instructional content, schedule, resources, assignments, and communication mediums for all of the workshops. All information is accessed via the course menu on the left side of the window. To start the faculty development program please click

COURSE CONTENT ORGANIZATION:
The following describes how the information is organized within this course.
The SYLLABUS presents the course overview, learning objectives, prerequisites, course requirements, and the course outline.

For all other workshops, the lesson includes an introduction, the schedule of live sessions, the presentation used to deliver instructional content and guide class discussions, assignments faculty are expected to complete upon completion of the workshop, and resources pertinent to the specified workshop that faculty are encouraged to explore on their own.
The CALENDAR provides the schedule of all synchronous workshops in a month-at-a-glance view.
RESOURCES provides a repository of all web-based resources, journal articles, and text books referenced in the workshop presentations; and, providing information and tools on online teaching strategies, designing active learning experiences, and methods of assessment.

Faculty and instructors are expected to actively participate in the live session discussions and discussion forums activities. I strongly encourage you to share your personal experiences, beliefs, and feelings about the learning theories, teaching strategies, and best practices for teaching online. Whether you are a novice or expert teacher; have taught online or face-to-face, in formal or informal educational settings, we all have valuable perspectives to add to our collective body of knowledge for delivery quality online instruction.
