To: Students in Comp II: Language and Identity From: Dr. Deborah Coulter-Harris Dates: 15 - 30 April, 2008 Subject: Weeks 15 and 16 Academic Work Schedule I want to thank you all for an enjoyable semester. You must have all work in by 11 p.m. 30 April, 2008. 1. Discussion 10: Discussion Topic: Analysis: I would like you discuss the languages used to identify particular religions; for example, traditional Roman Catholics used to pray in Latin, and the Muslims in the Middle East pray in Arabic, etc. What other languages are used to express other religions? Do religious languages unify or create divides? Write analytically; do not just give me streams of data. Due Date: 21 April, 2008 by 11 p.m. 2. Response Paper 8: I would like you discuss the languages used to identify particular religions; for example, traditional Roman Catholics used to pray in Latin, and the Muslims in the Middle East pray in Arabic, etc. What other languages are used to express other religions? Do religious languages unify or create divides? Write analytically; do not just give me streams of data. Length: 1-2 pages Due Date: 21 April, 2008 by 11 p.m. 3. Complete the research project you should have begun 7 weeks ago. Research Paper #2: Language of Religious Conflict General Overview This research paper will center on the function and influence of language in the practices of different religions or faiths, with attention to how religious language is an identity factor in interactions of race, class, gender, sexual orientation, and political thought, and how this religious language creates and persuades individual and collective social and political identity. • This paper will examine how religions continue to impact regional and international politics and conflict; how religious language forms individual and collective social and political identities, and how those conscious identities cause social and political conflicts or fracture zones. Nationalists often favor a repressive ideology, which demands strict adherence to a national tradition that includes the dominant religion, which compels and controls both religious belief and political behavior that may lead to religious conflict. • According to a recent article published on INCORE’s Internet site, “When a religious state is faced with religious politics, there is a religious conflict at issue. Under such circumstances, the state's very legitimacy is called into question, and violence may reflect preemptive actions of state control as well as the clash among contending religious parties” (Demerath and Strait 2004). Specific Directions You will write a five-page research paper. You must have a minimum of 10 sources cited on Works Cited page: please use these sources accurately in in-text citations. I want you to search the religious conflict sites and research any one of the religious conflicts happening around the globe. Ask yourself some of the following research questions: • What is the conflict? Where is it located? • How old is the conflict? • Who are the religious leaders? • Who are the political leaders? What religion do they belong to? • Have many people been killed? • Displacement of citizens? How many? • Etc., whatever questions you feel as relevant to topic. Mostly, I want you to visit the language of this conflict and talk about the WORDS that are used by both sides of the conflict. I am going to be quite flexible in how you approach this assignment. Be as creative as you want to be, but make sure the research project meets all requirements and responds to the prompt given. Due date: 28 April, 2008
