Welcome!!

Welcome to a new school year!!! We are having an awesome week so far. It has been very busy and the students are doing a wonderful job learning all the expectations of 3rd grade. Just a reminder...Picture day is next Wednesday August 31st. Meet the teacher is next Thursday night from 5:30-7:00. Hope to see all of you there!!! Next week we will start homework and spelling tests.

5th week of the 1st 6 weeks 2011-2012
|
Next week we will be in our 5th week of the 1st 6 weeks! In math we will be continuing with our rounding skills. We will be focusing on rounding to nearest 10 and nearest 100. Then we will be finding the sum and difference for rounding number sentences. In Reading we will be write about the changes from summer to fall. We will also begin our study on fractured fairy tales. The students will be expected to create their own. :) Spelling words for this week: loud point cloud house south sound join ground round voice proud found oil boil soil. In Social Studies we will study about City Hall and what people do there. In Science we will continue our study on magnets. We will also be sending home a note about a Compass Rose Project that is due Oct. 3rd. The details will be on the note. Any questions please call me at 817 598-2848 ext. 4323

6th week of 1st six weeks 2011-2012

This is the is the last week of the 1st 6 weeks!!! Just a few reminders: Friday 9/30 is Roo spirit day and Wednesday 10/5 is the end of the fundraiser. Parent Conference day is Monday Oct. 10th. Compass Rose Project is due Monday Oct. 3rd. Spelling words for this week: crew loose news school drew knew smooth pool shoot threw roof fool chew balloon choose In math we will continue addition and subtraction with regrouping. Reading we will continue our study of fractured fairy tales Science and Social studies...magnets and City Hall. Looking forward to a great week!!

Week of 10/3/11 (2nd six weeks)

We are already in the 2nd 6 weeks!! This year is going so fast. Don't forget Parent/Teacher Conference Day is Monday October 10th. This is a holiday for the students. I look forward to meeting with you about your child's success! Spelling words for this week: state close slide face globe pave size smoke flame broke prize skate smile plane stone In math we will be discuss how to read graphs and tables. In reading we will be take our unit 1 reading test. In writing we will be creating and writing about our pumpkin glyphs. In science we will be discussing and studying states of matter.

Week of 10/17/11

Dates to remember: Fall Festival Friday October 28th. 6:30-9:00. Everyone in 3rd grade is asked to donate one bag of indivdually wrapped candy. If you are interested in helping with the festival please contact Leah Kester. Thank you! In math we will be working on identifying coins and adding a group of coins to find the total. In Reading we will be focusing on poems and drama. Spelling words: sheep dream street east treat mean wheels peace real cheese leave stream sweet teacher heat Science: stages of matter (gas, liquid, solid) Social Studies: Jamestown and the Mayflower.

Red Ribbon Week!!! Every child who participates gets their name entered into a drawing for a prize! Monday-Tye Dye day Tuesday-Hat day Wednesday-Slipper day Thursday-Camo day Friday-Dress like a friend/twin day Fall Festival-This Friday October 28th.....6:30-9:00 We asking for donations of individually wrapped candy. We are starting with 0's and 1's. The students will be expected to tested over the facts every Friday. I have sent home a note with your child showing the schedule of facts and when they are going to be tested. Reading: We will continue our Helen Keller book study. Science: Destructive and Constructive Forces Social Studies: The piligrims and the Mayflower. Friday is Roo spirit day.

This is the 1st week of the 3rd six weeks. Report Cards will go home this Friday and are due back next Tuesday. Dates to remember: Tuesday November 15th is the pick up for the fundraiser items. Friday November 18th is the Big Kahuna Party. Please send socks with your child. Tuesday November 22nd we have early dismissal at 11:45. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are holidays. Week of 12/5/11

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! Don't forget Friday December 2nd is hat day. Spelling words for this week: shook flash speech think strong cloth brook stitch string scratch fresh spring switch stretch splash In reading we are studying the legend of the poinsetta and the candy cane. We will also begin another book study where we will practice skills such as vocabulary, summary, and character descriptions. The book we will be studying is The Best Christmas Pageant Ever. In math we are continuing to studying and learn multiplication facts 1-12. Our focus this week will be squares and 9's facts. In science we are studying simple machines and making a booklet. Projects are due December 13th. Social Studies we are studying the history of Kwanzaa and Hanukkah.

Week of 12/12/11

This is our last week before Christmas break!!! Just a few date reminders: Wednesday will be Latte in the Library for our class 1:00-1:25. If you can please come and enjoy some hot chocolate while reading with your child. Thursday will be Polar Express pajama day. We will be watching the show at 1:00 and the students can wear appropriate school pajamas. Friday is early dismissal at 11:45. We will be having our Christmas party at 10:30. Please come and join us! I sent home a reminder note yesterday. There will be no spelling or multiplication facts test this week. Have a wonderful Christmas break and we will see you back on January 4th!!!

Week of 1/9/12

Welcome back!! Dates to remember: MLK day is January 16th and there will be no school that day. Friday January 13th is scarf day. Spelling Words: afraid around upon never open animal ever about again another couple awake over asleep above. In reading we will be focusing on expository texts and practicing different objective skills In math we are continuing multplication..our focus will be 7's and 8's In social studies we are studying about people who have made a difference in their community In science we will be studying renewable and nonrenewable resources.

Jan. 23-Jan. 27

Dates to remember: Friday 27, is houseshoe day. In math we will be identifying fractions: parts of a whole and parts of a set. We will also be comparing equivalent fractions. Students that have not mastered a multiplication fact will also have the opportunity to make that up. In Reading we are still looking at expository text and how to texts. We will also be practicing different 3rd grade comprehension objectives. In social studies we are studying the pledge and what the words mean. In science we are studying the reasons for the season and the sun.

Week of 2/13/12

This week we have our Valentines Day party...Tuesday February 14th from 2:30-3:00. The students can begin bringing their boxes from home. In reading we are still studying Abraham Lincoln. We are doing sequence and Cause/Effect activities to go along with the book study. We are also studying suffixes and how they change the meaning of a base wood. In Math we are continuing our measurement unit. This week we will look at temperatures. In social studies our focus is on the history of our nation. In science we will begin our study on the planets.

Dates to remember: March 5th is Open House. Spring Break is the week of the 12th-16th. Spelling words for this week: supper happen pepper kitten sudden letter dinner cotton lesson mitten bottom summer better ladder ribbon Target vowel sound: short a, short e, short i, short o, short u Reading: We will be focusing on creating and identifying a setting, based off the book Roxaboxen. They will write about their hiding place and create the setting. We will also be studying suffixes and the root/base word. As well as reading passages with comprehension questions. Math: We will begin our geometery study. Our goal in 3rd grade is to learn 2d and 3d shapes and characteristics. Science: Planet projects are due and we will be presenting those in class, then hang them up in the hallway. Social Studies: The students will learn about supply and demand.

Dates to remember: Spring Break March 12th-March 16th. Once we have created our setting then we will go through the writing proces describing their Roxaboxen. In Math we will continue our geometry study by reviewing 2d and 3d shapes and figures. We will also begin studying and identifying symmetry and congruence. In Social Studies we will continue looking at Supply and Demand. In Science we will introduce Rainforest.

Rumphius story and working on dictionary skills, fact and opinion, summary, and water cycle. In math we are reviewing probability and pictographs. In science we are studing the rainforest. Dates to remember: May 4th....field trip money is due. $5.00 for students and $8.00 for adults. May 18th is the field trip to the Ballpark. More details will follow soon. 3rd grade talent show will be Thursday May 17th at 8:30.
