TECHNICAL NEEDS
The following operating systems, browsers, software applications and hardware necessary for NYU-SCPS Online.
A general rule of thumb is that a computer purchased in the last three years will work well for NYU-SCPS Online.
More specific requirements follow:
Computers and Operating Systems
Faculty and students must have unlimited access to a Mac or PC with at least 516 MB of RAM with one of the following operating systems:
• Windows 2000, XP, Vista, 7 and Internet Explorer 6 or Firefox 3+
• Macintosh OS X 10.3+ and Safari 3+
Mac OS Lion and Windows 7 are compatible with Epsilen and the Live Classroom.
Broadband internet access is required. Hard wired connections are preferred for the Live Classroom to reduce possible wireless interference.
Some Epsilen features, such as browsing course content, will work on tablets, but we are unable to support mobile devices at this time.
Browsers
Mac: Safari (Recommended)
All browsers must:
1) Allow popups.
2) Enable Java and Javascript
Software Applications
We recommend faculty and students have the following software applications installed on their machines:
• Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, and Excel
• Adobe Acrobat Reader
Audio and Video Hardware
For faculty and students in synchronous online courses, a sound card with a microphone and speakers or headset is required to communicate using Voice Over IP. (Modern Macs have sound cards built in.) A video camera is optional but recommended. Test to ensure your computer is configured to use the synchronous tools with the online wizard. View detailed requirements on supported browsers for the Live Classroom.
