Check out the newest collection on Texas Education on iTunes U: “The SCOOP on Reporting About People with Disabilities.” For teachers and students of high school journalism, “The SCOOP” is an educational video produced by the Texas Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities. This informative and interactive 45 minute training session titled "The SCOOP on Reporting About People with Disabilities" illustrates how to interact with and report about people with disabilities. The video incorporates open captioning and audio description to show media accessibility.
Each year the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities accepts nominations for the Barbara Jordan Media Awards for students who have produced a media story which accurately and positively reports on individuals with disabilities, using People First language and respectful depictions. There is NO FEE for nominations. More information and the Submission Guidelines and Entry Forms are available on the Barbara Jordan Media Awards website. Along with the video, students and teachers can view an award winning student report, “All Access,” by Barbara Jordan Media Award winner, Adam Hassler. The collection includes great tips for interviewing and appropriate word choice for headlines and story content.
