Course Credit Hours 6 Course Description Cyber Safety provides Ysleta ISD community members an understanding of the importance of Internet safety, particularly the risk and responsibilities involved with cyber bullying, social networking, social media, sexting, online etiquette, plagiarism, and copyright laws.
 
This online course serves as a supplement to the district's regulations and procedures concerning
appropriate use of the District's network and technology resources.
 
Participants are expected to have computer access to complete the necessary lessons and activities in this course. Participants are also expected to be knowledgeable in the use of email, Internet browsing, and navigating resources on the Web.
 
The course consist of four lessons: (a) cyber bullying, (b) social networking, (c) social media and sexting, and (d) online etiquette, plagiarism, and copyright laws.
Course Objectives Welcome to the Ysleta ISD CSI: Cyber Safety Initiative course! I am glad you are taking this course to support and implement a safer and better online learning experience. It is important that you become comfortable with the “in’s and out’s” of the online learning environment. This includes understanding and following Internet safety guidelines and regulations.
 
At the end of this course, participants are expected to:
  1. Identify and discuss the Internet safety guidelines and regulations with regard to cyber bullying, social networking etiquette, online behavior, and social media and sexting.
  2. Participate and complete all lessons and activities required.
  3. Demonstrate understanding and mastery by completing the assessments in this course.

Every unit will include guidelines and instructions to support participants in the effective and efficient use of available resources and information. Participants will use the following reading materials and video resources to complete the required activities and assessments:

Participation Guidelines Participants are expected to be respectful and disciplined in the virtual classroom. Likewise, participants are required to meet the set deadlines to ensure timely feedback, especially in discussion forums. It is the responsibility of the participant to comply with the following guidelines:
  1. The use of the Internet will be appropriately used as outlined in the course materials. Inappropriate use of the Internet will not be tolerated and may result in the loss of the participant’s rights to continue and complete the course. Participants are expected to have signed the employee Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) form prior to being enrolled in this course.
  2. Appropriate language and message content is expected at all times (i.e. discussion forums, online café).
  3. Participants must log in and communicate with the online instructor.
  4. Participants must use course materials in an authorized and appropriate manner.
  5. Participants are expected to follow rules specified by the online instructor, as well as those outlined by Ysleta ISD.
Academic Integrity Each participant is expected to do his/her own work. In order to eliminate any confusion about what academic dishonesty includes, the following definitions will apply:
  • Knowingly providing your work/answers to another participant for them to use as their own.
  • Knowingly using another participant’s work/answers and submitting them as your own.
  • Knowingly submitting work competed by another participant.
  • Plagiarizing anything from books, magazines, the Internet, or any published source.
  • Using illicit or banned materials during a test/quiz situation.
Participants will be required to retake the entire course if any of the above expectations are not met during the completion of this online course.
Course Assignments
Every unit will include specific activities and assessments to provide participants with different learning experiences in the appropriate use of cyber safety resources. At the end of the online course, participants will be able to create a cyber safety portfolio that they can use with their students. Participants are expected to complete the following requirements and meet the scheduled deadlines:
